Not to boast – but if anyone knows how to nail the “What to Wear on a Long Haul Flight” question, its me. For the last 3 years, I’ve travelled to and from the UK (and areas beyond) nearly every 3 months. It took the first two flights for me to realise something:
No one wants to see the look of a newbie flyer coming out of Terminal 5 at Heathrow. Let me paint the picture – hair in a state, makeup smeared, blackened eyes from lack of sleep, and barely standing from having had sat down in a cramped seat for hours on end.
So here is my personal list of what to wear (and bring) on a long haul flight:
1) Slippers with hard soles
Or airplane shoes as I like to call them. You are on a 6+ hour flight with the potential for sleeping. Get as comfy as possible – like these Uggs
2) NO makeup
If you must wear it to the airport, take it off with a handy wipe (store in your carry on!) once the plane takes off. Then apply some moisturiser (I recommend the Sephora Flawless Moisturizing Lotion
, which feels like you are quite literally splashing water on your face) and rest up. Nasty 6+ hour old makeup is nothing you want to walk off the plane with. Instead, go to the bathroom after customs but before leaving airside. Perfect opportunity to do all your post – airplane routines: makeup, brushing your teeth, sorting out your hair, deoderant, and perfume…
3) A change of underwear – and at least two outfits!
Lost luggage is more common then you think! Even when you are only taking one plane.
4) Loose fitting clothing
Nothing tight or uncomfortable – again think you are planning on sleeping. I like these leggings
and a long loose fitting shirt like this one from Zara
5) A comfy sweatshirt
It is always cold. Even if you are traveling from hot area to hot area, it is cold up there.
I’m talking iPad
, headphones (yours will always fit and much better quality then the nasty plastic wrapped kind!), book, knitting (if permitted, and if your thing). It is crazy how bored you get when you are stuck in a single location (ie: your seat) for 6+ hours with no internet. Load up the iPad with movies that you know you love watching. I recommend Disney movies like The Incredibles
and feel good travel movies like The Holiday
and Eat Pray Love
